The Fairy Godmother Program
It began quite simply with nothing. The word "NOTHING" in dark pencil printed across a white sheet of paper, the answer to the question, "What is beautiful to you?" It had been written in class after a child had seen a preview of Ensemble Theatre's holiday show. In the midst of all the smiles and good feelings, one child was already hopeless. Was it a joke? Was the kid being silly? "No," said his teacher. "He is eight years old and I have rarely seen him smile."
With that inspiration, ETC now brings to our theater about
1,500 school children during the holiday season to experience
something beautiful. Each year, Ensemble Theatre produces a
magical holiday show written and directed with families in
mind. These shows are bright and entertaining musicals with
positive messages. Through a unique Fairy Godmother program,
ETC is able to invite at-risk school children to see these
productions at no cost. The children are served refreshments
at intermission and meet the entire cast of the production
after the show.
Teachers of these participating schools receive a visual arts project to take back to the classroom. These projects are designed to help the children express themes from the show such as "What is beautiful to you". This program gives ETC and our show sponsors the opportunity to provide an artistic home base for at-risk children.
